According to SpaceDaily, Tokyo-based ArkEdge Space Inc. has validated the operational capability of its satellite short-messaging system using compact, battery-powered IoT devices.
During the 11th UNISEC-Global Meeting, the company showcased how simple ground terminals transmitted short messages to micro-satellites, which were then downlinked to ArkEdge’s ground station in real time. This successful demonstration highlighted the promise of satellite-enabled IoT for regions without reliable terrestrial networks.
The system utilizes low-power, long-range communication modules designed to collect data from sensors installed in isolated or maritime environments. The data are relayed via satellite to ground stations, confirming the system’s technical feasibility. ArkEdge Space is now preparing proof-of-concept and commercial missions across Africa, Asia, and South America. The firm plans to expand its IoT satellite constellation to provide continuous data monitoring for both developed and underserved regions.
At NIHONBASHI SPACE WEEK 2025, ArkEdge Space joined forces with CROSS U and international partners to develop satellite and ground networks, with a focus on strengthening African connectivity infrastructure. The event included sessions on antenna fabrication, live IoT-to-satellite demonstrations, and system exhibits—resulting in new mission proposals for regional IoT applications.
The AE-1c satellite was used for the demonstration. The initiative received initial support from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in 2021 and is being furthered by NEDO’s infrastructure program to standardize 6U satellite buses and enable efficient mass production.
Building on these developments, ArkEdge Space continues to advance its satellite IoT data solutions. Current proof-of-concept projects integrate satellite and ground sensor data into a geospatial intelligence platform for data-driven decision-making. The company remains committed to addressing connectivity gaps, enhancing environmental monitoring, and fostering talent for the next generation of digital-space infrastructure.
