According to IoT Business News, Nordic Semiconductor is extending edge artificial intelligence to the smallest battery-powered IoT devices, positioning on-device intelligence as a core capability rather than a specialist add-on. The company, known for low-power wireless connectivity solutions, is combining ultra-low-power silicon, machine-learning tooling, and lifecycle cloud services into a single edge AI offering aimed at mass-market IoT deployments.
Key insights highlighted in the report indicate that Nordic’s move effectively collapses the stack between ultra-low-power connectivity silicon, machine-learning tooling, and lifecycle cloud services. By embedding an NPU and tinyML models into a mainstream wireless SoC, edge AI shifts from a niche capability to a default feature in tracking, wearables, and industrial sensing, increasing pressure on competitors to integrate similar accelerators. The integrated Edge AI Lab and over-the-air pipeline also lower AI deployment barriers for traditional embedded teams, accelerating experimentation with on-device analytics. Collectively, this marks a broader IoT transition from basic sensing and reporting toward continuous, local decision-making at the endpoint.
At the center of the announcement is the new nRF54L Series system-on-chip platform, combined with the Nordic Edge AI Lab, which together make on-device intelligence more accessible and power-efficient. Nordic Semiconductor describes the solution as an industry-leading, ultra-low-power edge AI platform designed to bring AI functionality to billions of connected devices while maintaining long battery life and ease of development.
The nRF54LM20B is introduced as a new ultra-low-power, large-memory wireless SoC that integrates the Axon neural processing unit. In 2023, Nordic acquired Atlazo and its Axon technology, and the nRF54LM20B is the first large-memory member of the nRF54L Series to integrate this NPU. Axon is positioned as an ultra-efficient AI hardware accelerator, delivering up to seven times faster performance and up to eight times higher energy efficiency compared with competing solutions for workloads such as sound classification, keyword spotting, and image-based detection.
Beyond AI acceleration, the nRF54LM20B pairs the Axon NPU with 2 MB of non-volatile memory, 512 KB of RAM, a 128 MHz Arm® Cortex-M33 processor alongside a RISC-V coprocessor, high-speed USB connectivity, and support for up to 66 GPIOs. The SoC also incorporates Nordic’s fourth-generation ultra-low-power 2.4 GHz radio, supporting Bluetooth® Low Energy, Bluetooth Channel Sounding, Matter over Thread, and additional wireless protocols.
Alongside the hardware, Nordic is emphasizing software and tooling through its Edge AI Lab. The platform enables developers to generate custom Neuton models, which are described as industry-leading, ultra-tiny edge AI models. These Neuton models typically run on CPUs, are often under 5 KB in size, and are up to ten times smaller, faster, and more efficient than other CPU-run models. Using Nordic Edge AI Lab, developers can create models for anomaly detection, activity and gesture recognition, biometric monitoring, and related use cases, delivering privacy-preserving, real-time intelligence on devices with tiny batteries and constrained memory, without relying on cloud connectivity.
In the report, Nordic Semiconductor’s CEO Vegard Wollan is quoted as saying:

Wollan further states:
“Edge AI is no longer optional – it’s the only way to deliver safety, privacy, and sustainability at scale. Nordic’s edge AI solution enables millisecond decisions without round-trip latency to the cloud, ensures compliance through local processing, and delivers radically improved battery life for billions of connected devices. This is the new standard for ultra-low-power edge AI and Nordic is defining it.”
Edge AI is presented as a natural part of new product design rather than a late-stage enhancement. One deployment cited in IoT Business News involves a global supply-chain solution that upgraded its smart tracking devices with AI models created using Nordic Edge AI Lab. The models enabled detection of real handling events, including shock, shaking, and transportation, directly on an nRF54L Series SoC. These AI-driven insights were rolled out across an entire fleet without operational disruption, supported by Nordic’s nRF Cloud lifecycle services.
Oyvind Strom, EVP of the Short-Range business unit at Nordic Semiconductor, is also quoted in the report:

The nRF54LM20B SoC with the integrated Axon NPU is currently sampling to selected customers, with broad availability for development expected in early Q2 2026.
