Aechelon and Partners Unveil Project Orbion: AI-Enabled Digital Twin of Earth
Aechelon Technology, alongside Niantic Spatial, ICEYE, BlackSky, and Distance Technologies, has launched Project Orbion—an ambitious initiative to create the first AI-enabled digital twin of the Earth.
Project Orbion combines satellite imagery, radar intelligence, photogrammetry, and AI within Aechelon’s Skybeam platform to deliver real-time 3D simulations with physics-based accuracy and live weather. This planetary-scale geospatial model is continuously refreshed with data from ICEYE’s synthetic aperture radar and BlackSky’s high-resolution imagery.
Applications span wildfire monitoring, natural disaster response, shipping logistics, and defense operations. The system is also designed to train AI with true ground-condition data, bridging the gap between human perception and autonomous decision-making.
Niantic Spatial provides large geospatial reconstruction and visualization services, while Distance Technologies contributes advanced 3D lightfield displays. A first use case is already set: providing 3D scanning and simulation for the United States Coast Guard Aviation Training Center, integrating Niantic’s technology with Aechelon’s flight simulators.
Leaders from all partners highlighted the importance of real-time situational awareness. Aechelon CTO Nacho Sanz-Pastor emphasized the challenge of keeping pace with physical world changes, while BlackSky and ICEYE underlined the value of rapid, machine-speed geospatial data. Niantic and Distance showcased how geospatial visualization and immersive displays extend these capabilities for critical missions.
Together, Project Orbion is positioned as a dual-use solution for defense, enterprise, and humanitarian applications, setting a new benchmark for global synthetic reality and AI-driven digital twin technology.
