Alibaba Unveils First AI Glasses, Entering China’s Competitive Smart Wearable Market
As per the South China Morning Post, Alibaba Group Holding has stepped into China’s intensifying smart glasses sector by unveiling its first AI-powered glasses at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai. Named after Alibaba’s AI assistant, the Quark glasses were publicly demonstrated for the first time during the event, with an official launch expected later this year—though a precise date has not yet been announced.
According to the South China Morning Post, this marks Alibaba’s inaugural entry into the smart glasses market. Domestic competitors such as Rokid and Xreal have recently launched products, intensifying the landscape. Earlier this year, Alibaba also partnered with Hong Kong-based AR glasses firm RayNeo to integrate AI technology into its devices.
“AI glasses will become the most important form of wearable intelligence – it will serve as another pair of eyes and ears for humans,” explained Song Gang, head of smart terminal business at Alibaba’s Intelligent Information business group, during a WAIC sub-forum.
The Hangzhou-based tech giant is pursuing an aggressive AI roadmap. As noted by the South China Morning Post, Alibaba pledged in February to invest US$53 billion into AI infrastructure over the next three years. The company is expanding both its software and hardware capabilities, leveraging its in-house Qwen AI model series. In March, it upgraded its Quark platform into a multifunctional AI assistant, transitioning from a cloud storage and search tool.
Alibaba has also restructured internally, forming dedicated teams for AI applications and models, aiming to enhance its focus on consumer-oriented AI technologies, reports Chinese tech outlet 36Kr, as cited by the South China Morning Post.
Addressing common smart glasses issues such as subpar UX, limited AI engagement, and battery constraints, Alibaba says its Quark glasses offer improvements. The device features temples that are 40% slimmer than industry standards and an overall thinner frame. It integrates Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 chip and an undisclosed low-power processor. The glasses run on dual systems—Android and a Real-Time Operating System—for time-sensitive operations.
Song highlighted the integration potential between the Quark glasses and Alibaba’s digital ecosystem, which includes Taobao, Amap, and Alipay (developed by its fintech arm, Ant Group). The glasses allow users to scan QR codes for Alipay transactions, identify item prices via Taobao, and access real-time navigation from Amap while walking or cycling.
As reported by the South China Morning Post, this product preview underscores Alibaba’s growing ambitions in AI wearables and its larger push to embed AI across its services and devices.
