SHANGHAI, July 28 (Xinhua) — China Ai has launched 1,509 large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) models, making it the country with the highest number of such models worldwide and accounting for a major portion of the 3,755 models globally, according to presentations at the 2025 World AI Conference (WAIC).
China Ai has developed a full AI industry ecosystem, from core infrastructure to targeted sector solutions. Based on data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), there are more than 5,100 AI firms in the country, making up roughly 15% of the global figure. The nation is also home to 71 AI unicorn companies, or about 26% of the world’s total 271.
Yu Xiaohui, CAICT president, said the fast pace of foundational model development in 2025 and the adoption of new tech approaches show great promise for progress toward Artificial General Intelligence. He described China’s AI landscape as robust, featuring major firms, fast-growing unicorns, niche players, and innovative startups.
Publicly traded companies and unicorns are seen as core drivers for the country’s AI sector. Over 300 Chinese AI-focused listed companies generate about 70% of the nation’s AI industry revenue, per CAICT data.
Top innovation domains for Chinese AI unicorns include large models, autonomous driving, robotics, business intelligence, and AI chips.
China AI sector is growing rapidly, powered by an ongoing wave of technology, applications, and new business models. Yu noted that this expansion is fueling high-quality economic and social development.
Under the theme “Global Solidarity in the AI Era,” the three-day WAIC—together with the concurrent Global AI Governance High-Level Meeting—concluded Monday in Shanghai, attracting senior representatives from more than 40 nations and international organizations. (Xinhua)
