Google and Australia’s National Newswire Finalize AI Deal
Australia’s national newswire has entered into an agreement with Google to supply journalism for its Gemini artificial intelligence, aimed at strengthening response accuracy. Both companies confirmed the deal, though no financial details were released.
Nic Hopkins, Google’s head of news partnerships for Australia and New Zealand, said the agreement will allow real-time information to “enhance” Gemini’s capabilities. Australian Associated Press (AAP), established nearly 90 years ago, stated its content will ensure timeliness and accuracy in Google’s AI output. “This is a strong endorsement of our reputation as a leading and trusted news media organisation,” AAP chief executive Emma Cowdroy noted.
The announcement follows a wave of recent agreements between news outlets and generative AI firms seeking to improve natural-language results. Earlier, AFP partnered with Mistral to let its chatbot draw from AFP reporting. At the same time, other media organisations have pursued legal challenges over the use of copyrighted work in AI training.
