Reimagining Sustainable Tourism Through Immersive Technology – Hiverlab at World Tourism Day 2025
As digital transformation accelerates, tourism is being redefined—not only by how people travel, but by how destinations connect with visitors sustainably.
At the World Tourism Day 2025 celebrations held at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, global thought leaders, policy makers, and innovators convened under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.” Among them was Christopher William, Co-Founder & Head of Creative Technologies at Hiverlab, who presented one of the event’s flagship case studies: the Jewel-rassic Quest Spatial AR Experience at Changi Airport.
Setting the Stage for Sustainable Transformation
The event gathered distinguished dignitaries and experts: Shri Suman Bery (Vice Chairperson, NITI Aayog), Shri Suresh Gopi (Minister of State for Tourism, Petroleum & Natural Gas), Shri Suman Billa (Addl. Secretary & DG, Ministry of Tourism), Smt. V. Vidyavathi (Secretary, Ministry of Tourism), Dr. Joseph M. Cheer (Western Sydney University), and Amit Arora (CEO, Statue of Unity). Their collective presence underscored the urgency of embedding sustainability into tourism policy, education, and innovation.
Within this forum, Hiverlab showcased how immersive storytelling and digital-twin technology can serve as practical instruments for sustainability—reducing physical resource use while enriching cultural and visitor experiences.
Jewel-rassic Quest: Merging Nature and Narrative
Developed in collaboration with Heckler Singapore and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board, Jewel-rassic Quest transformed the Jewel Changi complex—home to the world’s tallest indoor waterfall—into a living digital ecosystem.
Visitors embarked on a guided AR journey across five floors, meeting prehistoric creatures that blended with the real environment through spatial AR devices. The experience encouraged families to move together through the space, lengthening dwell time, fostering engagement, and driving retail value—all while leaving a minimal environmental footprint.
A Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration
Behind the experience was a team of 50 + experts—AR developers, 3D artists, Unity engineers, and spatial-computing specialists—working under Hiverlab’s Spatial XR framework. By combining LiDAR mapping, Unity-based 3D asset development, and real-time AI analytics, the team produced an accurate digital twin of Jewel’s interior.
This allowed simulation of visitor traffic patterns before deployment, ensuring accessibility and comfort even during peak hours for more than 80 million annual transit passengers.
Data-Driven Design for Sustainable Impact
Every interaction inside Jewel-rassic Quest was measured. Using AI-powered data synchronization, the team monitored navigation, engagement time, and heat maps of visitor concentration. This insight improved flow management while informing future content updates—an example of how data-driven design can make tourism both efficient and environmentally conscious.
Unlike traditional exhibits that rely on physical reconstruction, this model repurposes existing architecture. Maintenance requires only software updates, cutting down carbon output and material waste—true to Hiverlab’s mission of aligning innovation with sustainability.
The Hiverlab Impact Model
Hiverlab’s approach, refined through years of digital-twin deployments, is defined by three pillars:
- Sustainably Scalable Infrastructure – Use virtual layers instead of physical builds, reducing cost and waste.
- Visitor-Centric Design – Turn audiences into participants through interactive storytelling that deepens emotional connection.
- Proof of Concept for Replication – Enable reuse of digital frameworks across new venues, cutting development time and emissions.
This framework has since inspired new projects, including an upcoming immersive activation at Gardens by the Bay, further extending Hiverlab’s vision of connecting people to nature through technology.
A Platform for Collaboration
World Tourism Day 2025 was more than a conference—it was a signal of intent. From government leaders and academics to private innovators, the dialogue emphasized that technology must enable inclusivity and sustainability, not replace them.
By presenting alongside figures such as Suman Bery, Suresh Gopi, and Suman Billa, Christopher William reinforced Hiverlab’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with global institutions to build scalable, responsible digital solutions for the tourism ecosystem.
Beyond Tourism: A Broader Vision
Founded in 2014, Hiverlab has pioneered the intersection of immersive XR, digital twins, and AI across industries including education, logistics, defense, and smart-city planning. Its guiding principle—“Building a Transparent World”—reflects a belief that technology should foster clarity, empathy, and sustainability.
The Jewel-rassic Quest success illustrates how this principle scales from enterprise solutions to public experiences. The same tools that guide travelers through Jewel’s forest canopy can train workers in remote facilities or help planners visualize climate-resilient cities.
The Road Ahead
Tourism’s next evolution will be built on data, storytelling, and responsibility.
As Hiverlab continues to collaborate with global partners on experiences such as Gardens by the Bay, it remains committed to its mission—using immersive technology to transform spectators into active stewards of a sustainable future.
🌿 Immersion with purpose—that’s how Hiverlab is shaping a smarter, more connected, and more sustainable world, one digital twin at a time.
