HTC VIVE Eagle AI Glasses Enter the Smart Glasses Market
HTC Corporation (TWSE: 2498) has launched its new VIVE Eagle AI glasses, signaling the company’s move deeper into personal wearable technology. The device combines music playback, AI-driven voice assistance, smart photography, videography, and real-time photo translation, all integrated into a lightweight frame that weighs under 49 grams.
Charles Huang, Senior Vice President of HTC, said VIVE Eagle is designed as more than just eyewear, calling it a new way of living with freedom, self-expression, and deeper human connection. By extending the Vive brand—traditionally associated with immersive VR headsets—into smart glasses, HTC aims to merge everyday practicality with intelligent technology.
Smart Glasses have existed in various forms for more than a decade, but the rise of AI assistants powered by large language models has renewed industry momentum. Current designs highlight the industry’s dual challenge: compact glasses often lack advanced immersive functions, while XR headsets offer rich features but remain bulky. Analysts expect these two paths to eventually converge, balancing capability with comfort. Against this backdrop, HTC joins competitors like Meta, which has partnered with Ray-Ban for its own AI smart glasses.
Unlike Meta, which keeps its smart glasses separate from the Quest and Horizon brands, HTC has placed Eagle directly within the Vive ecosystem. The feature set is similar to the Meta Ray-Bans, with an AI assistant, a capture button, and an LED light indicating when the 12MP ultra-wide camera is active. The camera produces HDR photos at 3,024 × 4,032 resolution and videos at 3MP (1,512 × 2,016) at 30 FPS. With 32GB of onboard storage, users can hold around 3,000 photos or 50 videos up to three minutes each.
The integrated VIVE AI assistant handles everyday commands like taking photos, playing music, or launching apps completely offline, while also extending to platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini for more complex tasks using anonymized requests. Through simple voice commands like “Hey VIVE, take a photo,” users can capture moments easily. Beyond media, VIVE Eagle allows reminders, note-taking, and restaurant discovery—all controlled by voice interaction.
One of its standout functions is real-time translation across 13 languages, including Arabic, Traditional Chinese, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Thai, and Turkish. Text captured with the camera can be instantly converted into spoken audio, removing language barriers in daily communication and travel.
The open-ear design enhances spatial audio with large acoustic drivers and virtual bass, minimizing leakage while avoiding ear-canal pressure. This allows users to hear music and AI prompts clearly while staying aware of their surroundings. ZEISS UV400 sun lenses provide UV protection without heavy tinting, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and prescription options are available.
Battery performance comes from a 235mAh cell, offering up to 36 hours of standby time and around 4.5 hours of continuous music playback. Unlike Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, the Eagle does not include a charging case, but it supports magnetic fast charging that delivers 50% power in just 10 minutes, keeping users powered on the go with a power bank or phone.
Privacy and security are central to the design. All data is stored locally on the glasses and never uploaded, tracked, or used for AI training. Even when third-party AI services are used, requests are anonymized. The system is protected with AES-256 encryption, and a built-in LED indicates when the camera is active. Recording stops automatically if the glasses are removed or the light is covered, ensuring both user and bystander privacy. VIVE AI is currently pending ISO 27001 and 27701 certification.
The VIVE Eagle is first launching in Taiwan, priced at NT$15,600 (around $520), with color options in Berry, Coffee, Grey, and Black. Each purchase includes sun lenses (ZEISS UV400), a VIVE Eagle glasses case, and two years of VIVE AI Plus. Pre-orders run from August 14 to August 31 at the Vive website, available exclusively through all 2020EYEhaus premium eyewear stores and designated Taiwan Mobile OP Experience Stores, with in-store experiences, fittings, and consultations open to the public. Starting September 1, Taiwan Mobile customers can purchase the device through telecom rate plans.
James Chang, President of 2020EYEhaus, said consumers increasingly demand technology that combines lifestyle aesthetics with practical features, noting the value of try-on and prescription services. Jamie Lin, President of Taiwan Mobile, emphasized that smart eyewear is a key step toward making AI more personal and seamlessly integrated into daily life.
By entering the smart glasses market with VIVE Eagle, HTC positions itself alongside major XR competitors like Meta, reflecting the broader industry goal of bridging the gap between compact eyewear and immersive headsets. The Eagle underscores HTC’s belief that AI-powered smart glasses will play a central role in the future of personal technology.
