Kongsberg to Deploy AI-Powered Digital Twin for Oman E&P
According to World Oil, Kongsberg Digital has formed a strategic partnership with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) to deliver an enterprise-scale AI-powered digital twin. The initiative is positioned as a major step in driving value creation through industrial intelligence and close collaboration.
PDO has chosen Kongsberg Digital’s Industrial Work Surface, Kognitwin®, as part of its plan to enhance safety, boost production, and maintain a competitive cost base. The solution integrates artificial intelligence to unify and contextualize operational (OT) and enterprise (IT) data, covering workflows across operations and maintenance.
The partners aim to begin deploying digital twins within this year, combining Kongsberg Digital’s ability to scale industrial software across complex facilities with PDO’s business expertise to ensure efficient flow of industrial intelligence.
“Collaboration and co-innovation are at the heart of this agreement,” said Kongsberg Digital CEO Shane McArdle in the report. “PDO is leading the way in shaping the future of work by investing in industrial intelligence that directly addresses their operational priorities. We are very excited to work with a partner who shares our vision and speed, matching our ambitions to be the platform for rewiring how work is performed across this industry.”
The collaboration underscores Kongsberg Digital’s expansion in the Middle East, where it is already partnering with major operators. With a track record of working alongside global leaders such as Shell, Chevron, and other energy companies, the firm is seen as a frontrunner in meeting rising demand for digital transformation in the region.
Ahmed Al Abri, AI and Digital Transformation Task Force Lead at PDO, added in the World Oil report: “The need for safer operations, higher production, and competitive cost structures is stronger than ever in the current energy market. Through our partnership with Kongsberg Digital, we are confident in our ability to meet these challenges while embracing new ways of working powered by AI and industrial intelligence.”

About Kongsberg Digital
Kongsberg Digital is an industrial software company within KONGSBERG that develops platforms used by energy, maritime and process-industry customers to operate more safely and efficiently. Its flagship Industrial Work Surface centers on the Kognitwin® digital twin platform, which fuses operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) data and increasingly incorporates artificial intelligence to optimize planning, execution and maintenance.
The company has announced multi-year frameworks with global operators such as Shell and Chevron to deploy digital twins at scale, reflecting a strategy to standardize data access, accelerate decision-making and reduce downtime across complex asset portfolios. Beyond this Oman agreement, Kongsberg Digital has expanded partnerships in the Middle East and Asia, positioning its software as a foundation for “industrial intelligence” initiatives that re-engineer work processes across upstream facilities. Public materials emphasize sustainability outcomes—lower emissions and improved energy efficiency—through advanced simulations, contextualized data and predictive workflows embedded in day-to-day operations.
About Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)
Petroleum Development Oman is Oman’s leading exploration and production company and the country’s largest oil and gas operator. It is majority-owned by the Government of Oman (60%), with Royal Dutch Shell (34%), TotalEnergies (4%) and Partex (2%) as private shareholders. PDO operates a concession area of roughly one-third of Oman’s territory, managing more than a hundred oil fields and over 8,000 wells, and it supplies the majority of the nation’s crude oil and natural gas. The company operates on a revenue-neutral model, focusing on efficient, safe and responsible development, storage and transport of hydrocarbons.
PDO has a long history in the Sultanate dating back to the 1930s, with first oil exports in 1967, and has been associated with major environmental and innovation projects such as the Nimr Reed Beds and solar-assisted operations. Digital transformation—spanning production optimization, HSE and maintenance—is a current strategic focus, reflected in its partnership with Kongsberg Digital.
About Shell
Shell is a global energy company operating in about 70 countries, engaged across oil, gas, chemicals and low-carbon energy. In digital operations, Shell has pursued large-scale deployment of industrial digital twins to standardize asset information, enhance maintenance and improve production efficiency. The company signed an enterprise framework with Kongsberg Digital to expand use of Kognitwin® across assets, citing efficiency and user-experience benefits, and subsequently extended a five-year agreement to continue scaling its digital twin capability globally. These initiatives are part of Shell’s broader digital strategy to drive operational excellence and decarbonization, using data platforms, simulation and AI to cut downtime and optimize energy usage. Public statements by Shell leaders and Kongsberg highlight the role of digital twins in streamlining workflows and enabling faster, more informed decisions in complex facilities.
About Chevron
Chevron is one of the world’s largest integrated energy companies, with upstream, midstream and downstream operations across multiple continents. In 2023, Chevron’s Technical Center entered a multi-year commitment with Kongsberg Digital to digitize global assets using the Kognitwin® platform, following earlier pilots.
The agreement contemplates multi-asset deployment and continued application development to improve user experience, efficiency and reliability across production and processing facilities. Chevron, like other supermajors, has been scaling digital twins to support maintenance, safety and planning, integrating asset models with real-time data and analytics to reduce unplanned outages and optimize throughput. Industry reporting and company statements emphasize the strategic shift from one-off pilots to enterprise programs, positioning digital twins and AI-enabled diagnostics as core tools in Chevron’s operational transformation.
