X publication reports that Orlando-based Mass Virtual has been awarded the U.S. Navy’s Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Extended Reality (XR) Prize Challenge. The recognition was given for the company’s immersive training solution, MassXR®, which equips Sailors to handle high-risk emergencies, particularly shipboard fire scenarios, by enhancing their readiness and confidence to respond effectively.
The challenge, initiated by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), aimed to identify virtual reality solutions capable of delivering lifelike refresher training for life-threatening situations.
After being selected to present in the final round, Mass Virtual showcased its scenario-based XR program that places trainees inside realistic fire response procedures. The solution is compatible with VR headsets, tablets, and gaming consoles, offering repeatable, hands-on training that prepares crews to act decisively when needed most.
“We’re proud to support the Navy and the broader DoD with solutions that protect lives, increase preparedness, and strengthen the fleet,” said John Brooks, CEO of Mass Virtual. “MassXR is operational today and built to evolve with mission needs — offering proven performance, unmatched flexibility, and most importantly, real return on investment.”
Currently, MassXR® supports more than 45 military platforms across over 200 global locations, training more than 31,000 service members annually. The platform provides flexible deployment, real-time feedback, and actionable data for leaders to improve performance. Its vendor-open design ensures scalability and adaptability to changing mission requirements.
“Our team brought their absolute best to this challenge—blending innovation, operational insight, and user-focused design to create a solution that’s not just impressive, but immediately usable,” Brooks added. “This win is a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of our people.”
Mass Virtual has confirmed its plans to continue collaborating with the U.S. Navy, including in-person demonstrations, gathering insight on evolving training needs, and exploring how MassXR® can be applied to support submariners facing high-risk operational environments.
