If Meta’s Ray-Ban Display AR glasses represent the future of wearable technology, that future may be difficult to fix. A detailed iFixit teardown of the $800 smart glasses uncovered impressive optical design, but serious drawbacks in repairability.
Inside the stylish frame, every component is tightly sealed and heavily glued. Even the most predictable wear-out part — the 960 mWh battery — is nearly unreachable. While theoretically replaceable, Meta doesn’t currently offer spare parts, and reaching it requires delicate work and specialized tools to avoid tearing fragile ribbon cables. As iFixit summarized, “battery repair isn’t totally impossible here, provided you can get your hands on a replacement battery (which Meta hasn’t yet made available).”
Beneath the surface, the hardware is as powerful as it is inaccessible. The glasses are powered by a Snapdragon AR1 chip paired with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, while a micro-projector built into the right temple sends imagery through a geometric waveguide embedded within the lens. That optical layer uses a cascade of microscopic mirrors to produce a 600 × 600-pixel floating display in the wearer’s field of view.
iFixit highlighted how this optical design tackles two of AR’s toughest visual flaws: the distracting eye glow visible to onlookers and the rainbow-like artifacts that appear under bright lighting. The result is a clearer, more natural augmented-reality image.
Yet that same engineering leaves no space for easy maintenance. The speakers are soldered, lenses glued to fragile assemblies, and even the hinges require patient trial-and-error to disassemble. Despite only offering an IPX4 rating (splash-resistant for light rain), the glasses are saturated with adhesive. iFixit called the amount of glue “overkill” for a product not intended for full-weather exposure.
In the end, the teardown captures both the brilliance and the short-sightedness of modern AR hardware. Meta’s Ray-Ban Display glasses showcase cutting-edge miniaturization and optical innovation — but until durability and repairability matter as much as design, consumers may find themselves upgrading every few years instead of repairing.
