Meta Eyes Medical Sector for XR Expansion
According to a report by Road to VR published on 14 July 2025, Meta is moving beyond its partnership with military tech company Anduril to bring XR technology to the battlefield and is now actively looking to expand its XR technology into the medical field. As stated by Road to VR, they already recognized for its consumer VR and MR headsets such as Rift and Quest, is seeking to extend its impact into healthcare.
The article cites new job postings from Reality Labs, their XR division, which show the company recruiting regulatory specialists focused on medical devices. According to Road to VR, one listing calls for a regulatory affairs specialist to join the medical devices compliance team, working on wearables and Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) applications for both the US and global markets. Another position is tasked with building relationships with regulatory bodies like the FDA and Competent Authorities to ensure Meta’s products achieve market access.
While it remains unclear which XR products Meta intends to introduce to healthcare, Road to VR notes that AR glasses such as the Orion prototype are likely candidates, offering advantages in real-world awareness and interaction—critical for doctors and surgeons. The publication also highlights Meta’s exploration of conversational AI and wrist-worn input devices for hands-free operation in medical contexts. However, Road to VR concludes that due to regulatory hurdles, it may be years before Meta’s medical ambitions are realized.
