Microsoft and Iconem Partner to Digitally Preserve Notre Dame for Future Generations
Microsoft is partnering with French startup Iconem and the Ministry of Culture to digitally preserve Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral after its reopening last year, following the devastating 2019 fire. Iconem, led by founder Yves Ubelmann, had previously declined a 2018 digital recreation opportunity, but the fire underscored the urgency for high-tech heritage protection. This new initiative, announced July 20th, will employ AI and advanced imaging, as detailed by Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith, to create a high-resolution “digital twin” of Notre Dame for donation to the French government.
The technology, inspired by Microsoft and Iconem’s 2024 St. Peter’s Basilica project, utilizes cameras, laser scanners, and drones to capture the monument’s every architectural feature. The digital model will aid future restoration by enabling detection of structural changes, with Ubelmann calling it a “revolution in restoration.” The 3D replica will also be featured in the upcoming Musée Notre Dame de Paris, offering the public virtual access to areas not visible during onsite visits.
Additionally, Microsoft is launching multilingual AI initiatives to address English-language bias, including supporting local AI training in Strasbourg and funding European language data annotation via Common Crawl. Brad Smith emphasized that equitable technology must reflect cultural and linguistic diversity, not diminish it.
