OpenAI has entered into a strategic partnership with India’s Tata Group to secure 100 megawatts of AI-ready data center capacity, marking a significant step in expanding its infrastructure presence in one of its fastest-growing global markets. According to reporting by TechCrunch, the agreement includes plans to scale capacity to as much as 1 gigawatt over time, underscoring the long-term scale of OpenAI’s ambitions in India.

The partnership forms part of OpenAI’s broader Stargate initiative, a global infrastructure effort aimed at building AI-ready compute environments and accelerating enterprise adoption. Under the agreement, OpenAI will become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center business, initially utilizing 100 megawatts of compute capacity. In parallel, the collaboration includes deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise across Tata’s workforce and the adoption of OpenAI tools to standardize AI-native software development practices.

This effort is also tied to the “OpenAI for India” initiative, which reflects the company’s expanding operational and enterprise footprint in the country. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently estimated that India now accounts for more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, spanning students, educators, developers, and entrepreneurs. This level of adoption has positioned India as a critical growth region for the company as it expands infrastructure and enterprise partnerships.

By establishing local data center capacity, OpenAI will be able to operate its most advanced AI models directly within India, reducing latency while ensuring compliance with national data residency, security, and regulatory requirements. Domestic hosting is particularly important for enterprise customers and government organizations handling sensitive information, where in-country data processing is often mandated by localization laws and infrastructure regulations. The presence of local compute capacity is expected to expand OpenAI’s ability to serve enterprise customers requiring secure, compliant processing environments.

The initial 100 megawatt deployment represents a substantial infrastructure commitment, given the power requirements of modern AI workloads. Training and inference for large language models rely heavily on clusters of graphics processing units, which require significant energy resources. If expanded to 1 gigawatt, the Tata-linked deployment would rank among the largest AI-focused data center installations globally, highlighting the scale of infrastructure needed to support advanced AI systems.

Beyond infrastructure, the partnership includes a broad enterprise collaboration designed to accelerate AI adoption across Tata Group companies. Tata plans to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise across its workforce over the coming years, beginning with hundreds of thousands of employees at Tata Consultancy Services. This deployment would represent one of the largest enterprise AI rollouts to date. Tata Consultancy Services also intends to use OpenAI’s Codex tools to establish standardized AI-native software development workflows across its engineering teams.

N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, said the partnership would contribute to building “state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India,” while also supporting workforce readiness and skills development in the emerging AI economy.

Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. It remains unclear whether OpenAI is making a direct capital investment in HyperVault infrastructure or leasing compute capacity under a commercial arrangement.

Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault platform itself represents a major infrastructure investment. According to prior disclosures cited by TechCrunch, TCS secured backing from private equity firm TPG to build AI-ready infrastructure in India. HyperVault is supported by approximately ₹180 billion, or about $2 billion, in planned investment and is designed to serve hyperscale and enterprise customers with large-scale compute requirements.

The collaboration also extends into workforce development. OpenAI plans to expand its certification programs in India, with Tata Consultancy Services becoming the first organization outside the United States to participate. These certification programs are intended to equip professionals with practical AI skills applicable across industries and technical roles. The initiative builds on OpenAI’s recent collaborations with Indian academic institutions spanning engineering, medicine, and design disciplines.

OpenAI is also expanding its physical presence in the country. The company plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, adding to its existing operations in New Delhi. These new locations are expected to support enterprise partnerships, developer engagement, and coordination with local regulatory authorities as OpenAI scales its operations in India.

The announcement coincides with India’s AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where global AI leaders including Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai are participating alongside Indian startups and enterprises. The summit highlights India’s growing importance as a global hub for artificial intelligence development and adoption across sectors such as finance, healthcare, and education.

OpenAI has already established partnerships with several major Indian companies, including Pine Labs, JioHotstar, Eternal, Cars24, HCLTech, PhonePe, CRED, and MakeMyTrip. These collaborations are designed to integrate OpenAI models into consumer applications, enterprise systems, and digital payment platforms, reflecting the company’s strategy to embed AI across multiple layers of India’s digital economy.
