TikTok Owner’s Lightweight XR Device in Development
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is reportedly advancing its entry into the mixed reality (XR) space with a new device developed by its PICO XR division. According to Engadget and Android Authority, ByteDance is working on lightweight mixed reality goggles that will compete directly with Meta’s upcoming XR products.
Said publication sources report that ByteDance’s PICO XR goggles are designed to layer digital objects onto the user’s real-world view, following the recent trend of tech giants pursuing advanced smart glasses and MR headsets. Sources cited by the publications state the new device is compact—comparable in size and shape to Bigscreen’s Beyond headset, known as the world’s smallest VR headset at just 107g (0.28 pounds).
Like Meta’s Phoenix XR project, ByteDance’s goggles will be tethered to a pocketable puck that serves as both the power source and the computational unit, according to the source publication.
Additionally, said publications report that PICO XR is developing specialized chips intended to minimize the latency between what users see in mixed reality and their actual movements. Chinese suppliers are reportedly being enlisted to assist with development. Android Authority notes that while the device is still in the development stage and the final design is not set, ByteDance’s XR division had previously worked on a high-end competitor to Apple’s Vision Pro before shifting focus to lightweight smart glasses—mirroring Meta’s recent strategic pivot.
According to the source publications, there is no confirmed launch date or market release region for ByteDance’s PICO XR goggles. Presently, PICO XR headsets are not sold in the US, and regulatory scrutiny surrounding TikTok could limit any future US launch of the device.
