Unilever: IoT Gives Supply Chains ‘A Sixth Sense’
According to an interview with IoT News by TechForge, the industry often highlights digital transformation, but what does IoT really mean for supply chains at a company like Unilever?
Dominic Maidment, Global Lead Enterprise Architect at Unilever, explained that the future lies not in one piece of technology but in blending IoT with AI, edge computing, and digital twins. As he put it, this mix is “like giving our supply chain a sixth sense.”
In the TechForge IoT News report, Maidment emphasized that this “tech cocktail” can drive sustainability through smarter factories, reduced waste, and highly efficient energy use. Yet, he warned of the challenges of interoperability, describing it as the “tech version of trying to get all your relatives to agree on dinner.” Without standards, businesses risk a tangled mess of devices, platforms, and protocols, with added security risks.
A key trend noted in the interview is edge AI. By processing data locally, companies gain faster responses, better privacy, and real-time logistics performance. Maidment highlighted that this ensures supply chains move beyond “guessing games.”
He also stressed that IoT is often misunderstood as just gadgets. In his words, “it’s the data that’s the real star,” captured and acted upon like the nervous system of a smart enterprise. For Unilever, the goal is turning insight into impact, improving life for consumers and the planet.
When asked for advice, Maidment told IoT News that businesses should “start with a problem, not a wishlist.” He urged cross-functional teamwork and scaling solutions effectively, reminding that advanced technology only matters when it serves a human purpose.
