UniSQ and iLAuNCH Trailblazer Advance Digital Twin Technology for Composite Repairs
The University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), through its Centre for Future Materials (CFM), is working with the iLAuNCH Trailblazer program, Boeing Australia, Memko, and Dassault Systèmes to develop advanced digital twin solutions for composite repairs. Using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, the project is digitizing repair processes that could lead to more effective and efficient maintenance, repair, and operations for next-generation fleets.
Backed by the iLAuNCH Trailblazer initiative, which focuses on closing skills gaps and boosting Australia’s space sector, the UniSQ-led project is targeting faster and more reliable composite repairs for both aircraft and spacecraft. Memko has provided UniSQ with access to Dassault Systèmes’ virtual twin software and the engineering expertise to replicate a product across its entire lifecycle — from digital design to manufacturing and structural repair. “This enables the virtual replication of a product from design through to repair,” said iLAuNCH Trailblazer executive director Darin Lovett.
Research is being spearheaded by Dr. Tristan Shelley at UniSQ’s CFM. To strengthen workforce development, three Ph.D. scholarships were created, allowing students to collaborate with scientists and engineers from Boeing and Memko in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Toowoomba. The work has already shown success, with Dassault Systèmes documenting outcomes that include damage detection, real-time visual data capture from filament winding to optimize wind paths, and the programming of scarfing tool paths. The aim is to eliminate repetitive processes, improve precision, and streamline composite repair operations.
Shelley explained that the team is also refining the nondestructive testing (NDT) process, enabling engineers to identify damage areas faster and with greater accuracy. “We use reverse engineering capabilities within the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to read processed NDT data. This allows us to create topology that can be overlaid with CAD models, improving visibility of internal layers and revealing the size and extent of the damage,” he said.
By digitizing these workflows, the UniSQ and iLAuNCH Trailblazer team is moving closer to transforming composite repair through advanced digital twin innovation, combining academia, industry, and cutting-edge virtual twin technology to enhance future aerospace maintenance strategies.
