Valenciaport Drives Progress with Digital Twin Platform for Greener Shipping
Valenciaport has successfully launched an open Digital Twin platform as part of the Digital Twin for Green Shipping (DT4GS) project. The project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme, aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of maritime transport using Digital Twin technology.
Over the last 36 months, 21 partners from 10 European countries collaborated to create a Digital Twin modelling methodology that incorporates variables such as weather, hull efficiency, and engine performance to optimise ship operations.
Fundación Valenciaport led the development of Living Labs—real-world testing environments—that validated advanced use cases with shipping companies including Euronav, Danaos, Baleària, and Star Bulk.
One significant achievement was the validation of the Just-in-Time (JIT) Arrivals concept, which enhances coordination between vessels and ports, reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and waiting times at port.
The project integrated interoperable digital ship twins with port systems, resulting in measurable energy savings and operational improvements.
Additionally, an open Digital Twin infrastructure was created, with more than 30 models published in a public digital library (models.dt4gs.eu) to encourage replication and adoption across the maritime sector.
As a legacy, the DGS Alliance was established to promote digital technology adoption, support collaboration, drive standardisation, and enable regulatory compliance for greener maritime transport.
Recently, the Port of Valencia introduced a new tool within its ValenciaportPCS app to enhance real-time communication during transport disruptions. The app offers instant notifications on terminal gate closures, roadworks, strikes, scanner operations, and other incidents impacting port-area road traffic.
