Varjo to End Support for Third-Generation XR Headsets in 2026
Varjo has announced it will discontinue support for its third-generation XR headsets—including the XR-3, VR-3, and Aero—starting in 2026.
The update, first noted by XT Today, highlights their strategic move to concentrate manufacturing on its XR-4 Series, which launched in late 2023. The Finland-based company detailed in its official support FAQ that software updates and bug fixes for the companion platform, Varjo Base, will continue until January 1st, 2026.
After the last update, XR-3, VR-3, and Aero owners can keep using existing versions of the software, but customer support, technical assistance, and developer resources for those models will end.
Launched in 2021, their third-generation models marked a shift from an enterprise-only approach. Both XR-3 and VR-3 were premium devices for business, priced at $5,495 and $3,195 respectively, each requiring an annual subscription. The Aero, released late 2021, was their first headset marketed to prosumers, retailing at $2,000 and providing subscription-free SteamVR access via Varjo Base (not plug-and-play like the Valve Index or Bigscreen Beyond 2).
While Aero was among the priciest prosumer PC VR headsets, it received praise for its visual clarity. Road to VR’s Ben Lang described it as “a dream headset for VR simmers who aren’t afraid to trade cash for immersion.”
Their third-generation headsets have been out of stock for over a year, with production confirmed to be discontinued. They are now focuses on the XR-4 Series, returning to an enterprise-first strategy. The XR‑4 line includes the standard XR‑4 ($5,990), the XR‑4 Focal Edition ($9,990), and the military-compliant XR‑4 Secure Edition, available in three models (ranging from around $18,000 to $32,000).
In March, This tech company announced that several previously free features in their Base would require a paid ‘Varjo Base Pro’ license, which offers advanced mixed reality tools, expanded tracking, programmatic controls, and multi-app support.
