WiseTech Global has partnered with Hapag-Lloyd to pilot the integration of Internet of Things technology aimed at delivering real-time global container visibility, tracking, and data collection across international supply chains. The initiative focuses on connecting live container data to operational systems used daily by logistics providers and cargo owners, according to reporting by Marine Link.
Under the pilot, Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet of approximately two million containers is equipped with IoT devices that transmit frequent location updates directly into WiseTech’s ecosystem of platforms serving the logistics, global trade, and supply chain industry. The project is designed to test WiseTech’s ability to ingest and process millions of data points each day, applying advanced algorithms to convert raw IoT signals into meaningful milestones and operational intelligence that supports decision-making at scale.
Once processed, container location and positioning data can be distributed to Hapag-Lloyd customers through several WiseTech channels, including the CargoWise Cargo Tracker and Container Automation solutions. Additional distribution pathways are planned through platforms such as GLO, INTTRA, and Neo, expanding how customers access and consume live shipment information.
The collaboration extends beyond traditional milestone updates. Its stated objective is to deliver highly accurate, real-time insights into container positioning, transit conditions, and arrival predictions. Customers are expected to gain visibility not only into where a container is located, but also into anomalies such as route deviations or delays that could affect arrival at the next critical handover point. The approach is intended to enable more precise, data-driven planning and execution across complex logistics networks.
Hapag-Lloyd has also introduced what it describes as the shipping industry’s first dynamic estimated time of arrival capability, known as Live ETA. The system continuously adjusts arrival predictions in real time based on actual movement and location data collected through IoT pings from GPS tracking devices mounted on containers. This dynamic calculation applies regardless of transport mode and, for shipments managed end-to-end by Hapag-Lloyd from port to customer location, improves delivery time accuracy by 75% compared with traditional static schedule estimates, the company said.
Zubin Appoo, Chief Executive Officer of WiseTech Global, said the shipping sector has historically depended on discrete and often delayed event updates that can lag by hours or days. He noted that integrating IoT-driven live container data into CargoWise represents a shift toward continuous, intelligence-led visibility. According to Appoo, the collaboration uses large-scale data to reduce uncertainty, improve efficiency, and support better operational decisions.
Karsten Schmidt, Director of Live Position and Track & Trace at Hapag-Lloyd, said the company has invested in equipping its entire dry container fleet with IoT technology to enhance service reliability. He added that integrating smart-container data into the systems customers already use allows the delivery of predictive insights rather than simple location markers. Schmidt described the partnership as a step toward a more transparent, resilient, and digitally enabled global supply chain, as reported by Marine Link.
