YouTube Secretly Using AI to Edit Creators’ Videos Without Consent
YouTube has acknowledged quietly applying artificial intelligence to some videos, sparking concern among creators. Musicians Rick Beato and Rhett Shull noticed subtle distortions in their content, including sharper wrinkles, smoothed skin, and warped ears. Beato, who has more than five million subscribers, said his appearance looked unnatural, while Shull argued the edits undermine authenticity and risk damaging trust with audiences.
The company confirmed the changes apply to select YouTube Shorts. Rene Ritchie, YouTube’s creator liaison, said the experiment uses “traditional machine learning” to unblur, denoise, and improve clarity, comparing it to smartphone processing. However, YouTube has not given creators a choice to opt out.
Experts warn the practice raises deeper questions. Samuel Woolley of the University of Pittsburgh told the BBC that framing it as “machine learning” obscures the use of AI, stressing that altering videos without consent erodes public confidence. The BBC also noted past controversies, such as Samsung’s Moon photo enhancements, Google Pixel’s Best Take feature that replaces smiles, and Netflix’s AI remaster of old sitcoms, which The Verge called a “nightmarish mess.”
Despite criticism, Beato said YouTube remains a platform that changed his life, highlighting the divide between creators alarmed by AI’s quiet influence and those who accept experimentation as part of the platform’s growth.

About Youtube
YouTube was founded in February 2005 by former PayPal employees Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, with the vision of making it easy for anyone to upload and share video online. The platform quickly grew and was acquired by Google in 2006 for US$1.65 billion, becoming one of the most influential media platforms in history. Today, YouTube hosts billions of videos and serves more than two billion logged-in users each month, shaping entertainment, news, education, and culture worldwide.
Artificial intelligence is deeply integrated into the platform’s operations. Its recommendation algorithms personalize feeds and drive the majority of watch time, while AI tools detect copyright violations, filter harmful content, and automatically generate captions. Recently, YouTube has also tested AI-based video enhancements in Shorts, unblurring and denoising clips during processing. These practices highlight both the platform’s technological ambitions and the ethical debates over transparency, consent, and trust in digital media.
