Samsung Confirms Project Moohan XR Headset Will Launch in 2025.
In a report by Road to VR, Samsung has confirmed that its highly anticipated mixed reality headset, known as Project Moohan, is on track for release this year. Despite the absence of any major showcase at last month’s Unpacked or the recent Google I/O, the company reaffirmed the headset’s 2025 launch during its Q2 earnings call.
Daniel Araujo of Samsung’s MX mobile division announced, “We are preparing to introduce next-generation innovative products, including our XR headset and TriFold smartphone this year,” during the earnings report. Although Samsung has yet to reveal Project Moohan’s final name, launch date, or price, the company’s commitment to bringing the device to market remains clear.
Project Moohan, built on Android XR and powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, features micro-OLED panels from Sony (resolution details remain undisclosed), pancake lenses, automatic IPD adjustment, eye and hand tracking, a removable external battery, and support for VR motion controllers. Press demos took place at Google I/O, but the headset has not yet been widely shown to developers.
The device is also expected to offer an optional magnetically attached light shield. Its TriFold smartphone, also teased in the same call, is likewise expected to arrive this year.
While Samsung has been cautious with public exposure for Project Moohan, expectations remain high for further announcements. For a hands-on look at the device’s comfort, display, and interface, see Road to VR’s review from December 2024.

About Project Moohan: History
Project Moohan represents Samsung’s renewed push into the extended reality (XR) space after years of observing and learning from the market’s evolution. The initiative began taking shape following Samsung’s earlier ventures in virtual reality, notably with the Gear VR series in the mid-2010s, which relied on smartphones for immersive experiences. Recognizing the need for standalone, high-performance devices, Samsung shifted focus towards more advanced mixed reality solutions.
Development of Project Moohan ramped up through a strategic collaboration with Google, leveraging the Android XR platform as its operating system base. Qualcomm was brought in to supply the latest Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, aiming to deliver cutting-edge processing and graphical performance. Sony, a leader in display technologies, contributed high-resolution micro-OLED panels to enhance visual fidelity.
While rumors and leaks surrounded the project for several years, Samsung kept most details under wraps, preferring to quietly refine hardware and user experience. Key milestones included private demonstrations to select developers at events such as Google I/O 2024, which revealed new features like advanced hand and eye tracking, automatic IPD adjustment, and modular components.
Project Moohan is positioned as Samsung’s flagship step forward in the global XR market, blending hardware innovation with next-generation Android XR software.
