Semtech has introduced what it calls the industry’s first single-vendor, device-to-cloud Internet of Things platform that delivers both terrestrial and satellite connectivity in partnership with Skylo Technologies. The company said the integrated solution enables IoT devices to seamlessly switch between cellular and satellite networks using one SIM card and one contract, eliminating one of the biggest barriers to global IoT deployment: loss of connectivity outside mobile tower range.
Historically, industries such as asset tracking, maritime transport, agriculture, and remote infrastructure monitoring have relied on costly and custom satellite integrations that required multiple suppliers and complex configuration. By merging Skylo’s non-terrestrial network technology with Semtech’s Smart Connectivity Premium service, the new platform removes the need for separate providers and simplifies end-to-end deployment.
“Semtech is our first partner to deliver Skylo-certified modules with integrated network access,” said Tarun Gupta, chief product officer and co-founder at Skylo. “By integrating Skylo’s satellite network directly into Semtech’s Smart Connectivity platform, we’re making NTN IoT as simple as ordering a traditional cellular solution. This partnership represents the future of seamless global connectivity.”
The platform includes Semtech’s Skylo-certified HL7810 low-power wide-area (LPWA) module supporting LTE-M, NB-IoT, and NTN connections, with the HL7812 adding 2G fallback to increase reach. Combined with Semtech’s Smart Connectivity Premium SIM, IoT devices gain access to more than 600 4G LTE and 5G partner networks in 190 countries, as well as Skylo’s satellite coverage spanning 36 countries and 60 million square kilometres.
Device and network management are handled through Semtech’s AirVantage cloud platform, which consolidates provisioning, billing, and analytics into a single interface. Rupa Datta, vice president of IoT Connected Services at Semtech, said the collaboration eliminates operational complexity. “We’ve simplified global IoT deployment to its essence: one SIM, one contract and uninterrupted connectivity with truly global coverage,” she said.
By unifying terrestrial and space-based connectivity in a single-vendor solution, Semtech aims to accelerate adoption of non-terrestrial network IoT services. Industry analysts, including ABI Research, expect IoT connections over satellite and NTN to grow by more than 25% annually through 2030 as businesses extend connected operations beyond traditional cellular range.
Semtech confirmed that it is currently testing the integrated platform with qualifying customers and preparing for general availability. The company states this launch positions them and Skylo at the forefront of bridging the gap between cellular networks and satellite communications for large-scale, resilient IoT deployments.
