Singapore will commit more than $1b between 2025 and 2030 to its National AI Research and Development (NAIRD) plan, reinforcing the city-state’s push to deepen artificial intelligence capabilities through sustained public investment. The funding, announced by Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo, is aimed at strengthening core research capacity and building a resilient talent pipeline.
According to reporting by Singapore Business Review, the NAIRD programme sits within the wider National AI Strategy 2.0 and supports objectives under the Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) framework. Together, these initiatives are intended to position artificial intelligence as a long-term pillar of economic and technological competitiveness.
The NAIRD plan concentrates on three central pillars: fundamental AI research, applied AI research, and talent development. As part of the effort, the government will establish Research Centres of Excellence to advance priority domains including responsible AI, resource-efficient AI, emerging AI methodologies, and general-purpose AI systems.
Beyond foundational work, the programme also seeks to expand applied AI capabilities that can be translated into industry adoption and RIE-driven projects. This includes supporting enterprises as they integrate AI technologies into real-world operations and innovation pipelines.
Talent development forms the third pillar of the plan. The government will work with researchers and institutions to strengthen pathways from pre-university education through to faculty and research leadership, ensuring a steady supply of skilled professionals to support Singapore’s AI ambitions over the long term.
