Singtel Launches AR Tour Guide for Tourists with 5G+ SIM
Landing in Singapore typically means clearing immigration, grabbing your luggage, buying a SIM card, and sorting out where to go next. But according to Marketing Magazine (Marketing Interactive), Singtel is transforming the traditional tourist prepaid SIM into a new digital experience.
Singtel has unveiled a 5G+ tourist SIM card that provides augmented reality (AR) travel experiences, turning sightseeing in Singapore into a gamified, interactive journey. As reported by Marketing Magazine, this new feature is set to launch in July.
How It Works: After activation, users gain access to an “AR passport”—a digital companion that guides travelers to ten top attractions, including Merlion Park, Sentosa, and Mandai Zoo, using AR maps, interactive trivia, games, and rewards.
Marketing Magazine cites Shilpa Aggarwal, VP of Mobile Customer Solutions at Singtel Singapore, who explained that the idea arose from travelers’ desire for more personal and playful experiences. “While tourist SIMs traditionally offer data and calls, we wanted to blend immersive content with next-gen 5G+ tech, connecting tourists to more info and deeper engagement,” Aggarwal told Marketing Magazine.
With the AR passport, travelers can explore iconic landmarks through trivia, mini-games, and stories, all while staying connected. Users activate the AR features by scanning a QR code (no app download needed), which unlocks a map to attractions enhanced with AR overlays, selfie filters, fun facts, and mini-games. The platform is intuitive, with step-by-step guides and multi-language support.
Aggarwal said to Marketing Magazine: “This isn’t just about staying online — it’s about using connectivity to create smarter, richer experiences.”
To add cultural relevance, Singtel collaborated with local creators for the AR content at each site. Every spot in the AR Passport includes a story about the landmark, trivia, and bite-sized games, aiming for a meaningful but lighthearted experience for both tourists and locals.
Rewards and Engagement: According to Marketing Magazine, tourists earn real rewards by checking in at locations and completing activities, including merchant discounts, partner vouchers, and even exclusive collectibles such as Singtel’s SG60 Merlion plushies. The AR experience also integrates with Singtel’s hi!Rewards, unlocking more perks for top-ups and app engagement.
“Our goal was a seamless, enriching digital journey for all travelers—regardless of age or tech skills,” Aggarwal shared with Marketing Magazine, emphasizing that the design is inclusive and user-friendly.
While the initial launch highlights ten curated sites, the AR platform was built for expansion. Singtel plans to add seasonal content, festive overlays, and partner or crowd-sourced locations in future updates, as stated to Marketing Magazine.
Although focused on inbound tourists, Aggarwal told Marketing Magazine there’s potential for local use, from national campaigns to community engagement. Singtel is also looking at how this AR model can be scaled to other Singtel Group markets, offering a creative take on digital storytelling in daily life.
To keep tourists coming back or recommending the service, Singtel will continue refreshing the AR platform with new games, destinations, and evolving content drops. Aggarwal told Marketing Magazine: “The platform is designed to evolve, giving tourists a reason to return, explore further, and recommend the experience to others.”
By turning a basic SIM card into an immersive gateway, Singtel is, as per Marketing Magazine, shifting away from simply selling connectivity. With the AR Passport, Singtel connects tourists to the heart of Singapore the moment they arrive.
