Taiwan Design Sustainability Expo: A Vision for the Future
Hiverlab, a leader in Immersive and Spatial Tech Company with Global headquarters in Singapore, proudly participated in Tawain’s 2024 Taoyuan Youth Design Expo & International Design Forum, an event that was much more than a traditional exhibition. It was a global stage for innovation and sustainability, bringing together creative minds to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. With the theme “Designing the Future: Empowering Youth,” this year’s event saw an impressive lineup of 177 designers and 87 groundbreaking projects, each contributing to the evolving narrative of sustainable design. Hiverlab’s cutting-edge technology and thought leadership in spatial intelligence were a key part of the showcase, demonstrating the transformative power of technology in design.
At the forefront of technological innovation, Hiverlab’s co-founder Yi Yuan delivered in Taiwan a captivating presentation on how Virtual Reality (VR) and Digital Twin technology are reshaping our interaction with public spaces. One of the highlights of her presentation was an immersive recreation of Singapore’s iconic Changi Airport waterfall. This project went beyond creating a visually stunning 3D replica; it demonstrated the practical and transformative applications of Digital Twins in urban environments.
Using VR and Digital Twin technology, the recreation allowed for interactive storytelling, real-time analysis, and learning opportunities while in Taiwan’s showcase. These advancements pave the way for smarter, more sustainable urban spaces, offering solutions that extend far beyond aesthetics. By integrating technology with design, we can create public spaces that are not only engaging but also sustainable and functional for the needs of the future.
Innovative Solutions for Sustainability
A recurring theme throughout the forum was the pivotal role of design in addressing environmental challenges. Collaboration emerged as a critical factor in achieving sustainable, people-centered urban spaces. Governments, organizations, and designers came together to showcase creative solutions that combine functionality with aesthetics, proving that sustainability and innovation can coexist.
One standout focus area was the fight against plastic pollution. Designers unveiled projects that utilized circular economy principles, transforming upcycled materials into practical yet beautiful creations. For example, innovations ranged from everyday products made of repurposed coffee grounds to intricate designs crafted from pasta waste. These projects underscored the potential for waste materials to fuel creativity and innovation on a global scale.
Empowering Youth as Global Changemakers
Taiwan’s young designers shone brightly at the expo, emphasizing the impact of empowering youth to drive transformative change. Their projects tackled critical global issues such as urban sustainability, cultural preservation, and community-driven design. With bold ideas and fresh perspectives, these young changemakers demonstrated the unique potential of youth to address complex challenges.
One notable project focused on urban sustainability by reimagining community spaces to foster social interaction while reducing environmental footprints. Another initiative centered on cultural preservation, integrating modern design techniques with traditional Taiwanese craftsmanship to celebrate and sustain heritage.
