Vivo Challenges Apple Vision Pro with Lighter and Cheaper Mixed-Reality Headset
Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has introduced a mixed-reality headset that closely resembles Apple’s Vision Pro in design, interface, and name, but offers significant advantages in weight and pricing. According to reporting by SCMP’s Coco Feng, the device, called Vivo Vision, weighs 398 grams—about 35 per cent less than Apple’s headset, which weighs at least 600 grams.
The Vivo Vision uses eye tracking and hand gestures for control, much like Apple’s device. It is equipped with two OLED displays delivering a combined 8K resolution (3,840 x 3,552 pixels each). The headset runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 platform, boosting graphics-processing frequency by 15 per cent compared with its predecessor, ensuring clearer visuals and reduced jitter.
Users can choose between two strap options—a solo knit band and a dual-loop band. For now, the device supports specific Vivo smartphones and Windows 10 or later PCs for screen projection.
The company first showcased the headset at the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan earlier this year but only recently released technical specifications. Vivo has invited customers in 12 Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, to book demo sessions in retail stores.
Although the official release date and final price remain undisclosed, Vivo COO Hu Baishan suggested pricing could be reduced to around 10,000 yuan (US$1,393) or less. This would place the headset at one-third of Apple’s Vision Pro, which costs at least 29,999 yuan in mainland China. Such pricing reflects a strategy long used by Chinese hardware makers—delivering high specifications at far lower prices.
Market data from Canalys shows Apple ranking fifth in mainland smartphone shipments during the second quarter, with a 15 per cent market share, while Huawei and Vivo led the list. Meanwhile, IDC projects that China will become one of the largest VR and AR markets globally, with spending expected to exceed US$10.5 billion by 2029, second only to the US.
